About GIS

One of the most exciting developments for research over the past decade has been the increasing sophistication of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), along with a dramatic increase in the availability of geographically-referenced data. A GIS is a specialized database that can store and manipulate geographic information. With GIS, researchers can analyze spatially distributed phenomena by juxtaposing layers of spatial data and by examining intrinsic spatial patterns. GIS brings a new dimension to core research questions of the social science disciplines. It is also a potent tool for research at the interface of the social, health, natural, and environmental sciences, and for work in architecture, preservation, and urban planning.

About The GIS Working Group

The GIS Working Group was organized in January 2002 to address infrastructure needs for GIS-based research and to promote spatial social science at Columbia. Since its creation this coalition has sought to expand GIS activity at Columbia by building on existing infrastructure and to provide a mechanism for information-sharing and coordinated planning across the University. The working group was recently awarded a grant from Columbia University's Academic Quality Fund (AQF) to expand GIS resources at Columbia University. Key components of the grant include: Units that are participating in the GIS Working Group are:
